MAYBE THEY ARE RIGHT? 

Do you know what a plumb bob is? 

I didn’t. 

Until a few days ago. 

I had to learn to use a plumb bob to line up the end of the new beam that was being built for the new landing on the deck stairs. 

You may remember my story about the deck stairs. 

The stairs were long and steep but that didn’t stop me from trying to walk down them like an adult. 

I hadn’t seen an adult use their head to stop on the third step before, but I used mine. 

After that little incident I was scared to go down the stairs. 

.

Not now. 

.

A plumb bob is a weight at the end of a string so that it shows exactly a straight line to earth, or the ground. 

.

So now I have to wonder if those people are right? 

You know who. .

.

If the string is going straight down and it points to the ground. 

.

Does that mean that the earth is flat? 

.

If the earth was round, shouldn’t the string hang in a curve? 

.

Just food for thought. 

.

I learned another lesson while building the deck landing. 

.

If a space looks too small to put your head through, it probably is. 

If you stick your head between two posts before the final spindle gets installed, you don’t know what is going to happen. 

I do know. 

My head must be a little funnel shaped, because it easily went through the space but no matter how hard I tried,  

I couldn’t pull it back. 

Mom was on the way to get some butter to rub on my ears, but grandpa only had to take out 4 screws and spread apart the posts, and I was free. 

.

Let me tell you. 

.

I used my own tools and filled that space in right away. 

You don’t have to use a plumb bob all the time to get things straight. 

 you also can use,  

A Level. 

.

After working on the stairs Joseph and I had to take a break and read a book to Grandma. 

It must have been a funny book or perhaps Joseph just spit up,  

Again. 

.

Have you ever had a something in your shoe? 

.

I haven’t. 

.

Grandpa has. 

.

I was with Grandpa when he had to stop and sit down. 

I thought it was because he is old and tired, and needed another rest. 

.

He took off his boot and shook it upside down into his hand. 

.

Something fell out. 

.

I looked at it and looked at it and then I picked it up and put it in my mouth. 

.

I realized quickly that it wasn’t a candy. 

.

Even if it was candy, it just came out of a sweaty work boot. 

.

I don’t know what it was that came out of the boot, but it didn’t taste very good. 

.

This is how kids build immunity. 

.

I learned another valuable lesson. 

.

I learned that you don’t have to stop working to have a pee. 

.

Those new deck boards will soak it up, and no one will ever know. 

.

Except that my shorts were just wet on the front. 

.

My parents and I learned lots of things while building this stair landing. 

Most importantly. 

.

Potty training isn’t going to be as easy as they think. 

.
