This must have been how they felt.
Those brave people leaving their nice warm homes in search of adventure and fortune.
This is me now.
They say that there aren’t explorers now like in the old days.
When they asked if I wanted to go, I said “Why not, it could be fun.”
I didn’t know where we were going or even how long we would be gone.
Maybe I am going to help Sir John Franklin find the Northwest Passage?
No, that can’t be it, that was in 1845.
Can you imagine setting out with 3 years supplies to search for a passable route through the Artic?
Maybe I am going to help Captain James Cook cross the Antarctic Circle?
No, that can’t be it either, that was in 1773.
Maybe I am going with Captain James Weddell?
He was the first person to go the furthest south in Antartica.
No, that was in 1823.
I guess I am going to explore this vast area right here.
I don’t know where we are, all I can see is snow, lots and lots of snow.
Wait, in the distance I can make out a tree line.
Maybe we can make it there and make a shelter?
I am not really in control of where we are going, you see I am in my red sled.

That’s funny isn’t it.
Red Sled.
Let me tell you about the expedition.
First, I got dressed in my warmest winter snowsuit.
Then grandpa strapped me in the Red Sled.
Still funny.
We went outside and I slid down this big hill.
I almost tipped over!
Then we trudged through the deep, deep snow.
We should have put our snowshoes on.
Not me, I was fine, but anyone walking.
We walked and walked, just when I thought we were so far out that we wouldn’t find our way back we turned around.
Then.
Up.
Up.
To the top of the hill, and then,
down I went.
Back on street level.
I could stop worrying now,
we were on our way home.
Maybe we didn’t find the Northwest Passage, or go to the Antarctic,
but this was our adventure.
And it was a big one for us.
Have you ever been on a big adventure?
